Farfalle: A Ring Inspired by Bow-Tie Pasta

A Unique and Delicate Piece of Jewelry

The Farfalle ring, designed by Hyeran Lee, takes inspiration from the familiar shape of bow-tie pasta, creating a unique and charming piece of jewelry that combines elegance and wit.

The idea for the Farfalle ring came to Hyeran Lee during a dinner with friends. As they shared a plate of farfalle pasta, the bow-tie shape caught her attention and sparked a desire to express the joyous mood of the scene through a piece of jewelry. By reinterpreting the beauty of solid metal and adopting the charming appearance of farfalle, Lee created a ring that is both familiar and captivating.

What sets the Farfalle ring apart is its ability to transform an everyday cooking ingredient into a piece of wearable art. Made from sterling silver with gold plating, the ring captures the essence of farfalle and provides visual pleasure through its unique design. The bow-tie shape adds a touch of elegance and wit, making it a fascinating accessory for any occasion.

The Farfalle ring offers more than just aesthetics. It provides an easy and exciting addition to fashion in daily life. Simply choose the right size of ring, and you can effortlessly complete your fashion statement. The ring comes in different sizes, offering a broader selection for individuals to find their perfect fit. The golden texture and color on the ornaments give them the appearance of real butterfly pasta, adding a touch of luxury to the design.

This project started in January 2009 in Seoul and quickly gained recognition. In February of the same year, the Farfalle ring was displayed at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City as part of the Destination Project, which aimed to discover new artists and introduce their innovative designs. The ring was later presented at the 2011 Design Korea and the Asia Top Gallery Hotel Fair (AHAF), further solidifying its place in the world of design.

The creation of the Farfalle ring presented its own set of challenges. One of the most difficult aspects was capturing the bow-tie shape of farfalle accurately. Lee used wax carving skills to create the original form and adopted the metal casting technique for the first modeling. The use of a silicone mold ensured consistency in quality and facilitated mass production.

The Farfalle ring is a testament to the beauty and value that can be found in everyday objects. It showcases the delicate craftsmanship of handmade pieces and stands in contrast to mass-produced products. While it may not be adorned with costly jewels, the unique shape created by Hyeran Lee's fingertips is enough to convey the true beauty and value of this piece of jewelry.
